Seattle Mandolin Orchestra: In Concert @ the Main Library

Saturday, June 25, 2022

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

The Mandolin in America has always been both a classic Italian instrument and an instrument adopted by many other styles. This Spring, the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra, under the direction of Joseph Pollard White, will be featuring music from the Central America/Gulf of Mexico/Caribbean region. In addition to works in Calypso, Jazz and Rag-time styles, we will focus on pieces by two important African-American composers from very different traditions:

William Grant Still (1895-1978) was the first African-American composer to achieve wide recognition in the 'classical' world. We will be performing his 'Danzas de Panama' (1948), based on songs and dances collected by Tacoma-born violinist/ethnomusicologist Elisabeth Waldo, originally written for string orchestra and adapted for mandolin orchestra.

Afro-Cuban José White Lafitte (1836-1918) was a celebrated violin virtuoso and composer, touring both Europe and the United States to great acclaim. We will be performing his most famous piece, the charming 'La Bella Cubana' (1910).
