This Victorian Life

Sunday, July 14, 2019

In honor of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Everett Public Library, Sarah and Gabriel Chrisman tell us what like was like in the Victorian era, the time in which the library was born.

Come explore the diversity of life in the Victorian Era! Society was every bit as complex and interesting in the 1890s as it is today. Learn about the wide range of foods, clothing, and technology that defined culture at the time the library was founded.

The Chrismans
live in a Victorian-era house in Port Townsend, and they “incorporate as many details of the late-nineteenth-century into our daily lives as we possibly can.” Sarah wears a corset 24/7, 365 days a year.  All of Gabriel's current eyeglasses date from the nineteenth century, from his 1850's green sunglasses, to his everyday gold-rimmed spectacles, to his pince-nez for reading.  They don't have cell phones, or watch television; Sarah doesn't even have a driver's license. Living the way Victorians lived gives the couple insight as to why Victorians thought and acted as they did. “Our entire life is an ongoing research project into our favorite decades of the 1880's and '90's.” This “project also provides vibrancy and realism to Sarah’s historical novels about the period.
